Boa: Video Compressor · Last updated 6 September 2026
This policy explains what Boa (“the app”, “we”) does with your information. Boa is published by Juan Bustos, who is the data controller for the limited processing described here.
1. Your videos and photo library
Boa asks for access to your photo library so it can list your videos, show thumbnails, play a video you tap, and save compressed copies back to an album named “Boa”.
- Compression happens on your device. Video is decoded, scaled and re-encoded locally using Apple’s AVFoundation and VideoToolbox frameworks. No video, thumbnail, or frame is ever uploaded to us or to anyone else.
- We cannot see your library. Photo access is granted by iOS to the app on your device; it does not give us any access.
- Compressed copies are written to your library. A working file is created in the app’s temporary folder during an encode and deleted once the copy is saved.
- Deletion is always yours to confirm. Boa never deletes an original by itself. When you choose to delete one, iOS shows its own confirmation and the video goes to Recently Deleted, where it remains recoverable for 30 days.
- iCloud videos. If a video is stored in iCloud rather than on your device, Boa asks the Photos framework to download it so it can be compressed or played. That download is between your device and Apple; we are not part of it. On a cellular or Low Data Mode connection, Boa asks before downloading.
2. What Boa stores on your device
All of the following stays on your device, is not readable by us, and is removed when you delete the app:
- Your compression settings (quality, resolution, codec and related preferences).
- A record of which originals you have compressed — the Photos identifiers of the original and its copy, the file name, the two file sizes, and the date — so the app can offer the original for deletion and show what deleting it would give back.
- Which videos you have skipped or asked not to be shown again.
- How many of your three free compressions you have used.
3. Purchases
Boa offers an optional paid upgrade for unlimited compression. Purchases are made through Apple’s App Store and processed on our behalf by RevenueCat, Inc., which tells the app whether your purchase is active.
- We never see your payment details. Card and billing information is handled by Apple and is never shared with us or with RevenueCat.
- No account is created. RevenueCat assigns a random, anonymous identifier to your installation. It is not linked to your name, your email, or your Apple Account.
- What RevenueCat receives: that anonymous identifier, the App Store transaction and receipt data for your purchase, and basic technical information such as device model, operating system version, app version and country. This is used to validate the purchase, keep your subscription status current across your devices, and let you restore a purchase. RevenueCat processes data on servers in the United States.
- Legal basis (EU/UK). Performing the contract you enter into when you buy the upgrade, and our legitimate interest in preventing fraudulent purchases.
If you never make a purchase and never open the upgrade screen, the app still contacts RevenueCat once at launch to check whether an entitlement exists for your installation.
4. What Boa does not do
- No analytics, crash reporting, attribution or advertising SDKs.
- No advertising identifier (IDFA) and no App Tracking Transparency prompt, because Boa does not track you.
- No collection of your name, email address, phone number, contacts, location, or health data.
- No selling or sharing of personal information, as those terms are used in the California Consumer Privacy Act.
5. Data retention
Data stored on your device is kept until you delete it in the app or delete the app itself. Purchase records held by RevenueCat are retained for as long as needed to support your purchase and to meet Apple’s and our accounting obligations, in line with RevenueCat’s own policy.
6. Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, delete, or export the personal data held about you, to object to or restrict processing, and to complain to your data protection authority. Because Boa holds no account and no directly identifying information, the practical routes are:
- Everything on your device: delete the app, or use “Start Over” in the app to clear its records.
- Purchase data: email us at the address below and we will ask RevenueCat to delete the records associated with your installation. Note that deleting them removes the ability to restore a purchase.
- Your subscription: managed by Apple. Settings → your name → Subscriptions, or through the “Manage subscription” screen in the app.
7. Children
Boa is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect personal information from them.
8. Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the updated version is posted at this address with a new date at the top. Material changes will also be noted in the app’s release notes.
